What a good Instagram bio does
Your bio has one job: turn a visit into a follow or a click, in about three seconds. So it should answer, in this order: what you do, who it is for, why you are worth following, and what to do next. Everything else is decoration. The 150-character limit is not really a limit. It is what forces you to be clear.
Bio ideas for local & walk-in businesses
Lead with what you do and where you are. Locals decide in seconds if you are nearby and open.

The bookshop with a coffee corner 📚 Weekly readings · staff picks worth arguing about Austin, TX · open 7 days
A bit of personality in line two without losing clarity. One line with character beats five clever ones.

Sells the feeling (no panic) before the service. The audience line shows exactly who should follow.
The four-line formula
- 1
Line 1: what you do, in plain words people search for. Instagram reads your bio text. "Austin wedding photographer" gets found. "Capturing love stories" does not.
- 2
Line 2: proof or personality. A number like "500+ happy clients", a clear phrase, or the thing only you would say.
- 3
Line 3: the practical bit if you are local. City, hours, languages.
- 4
Line 4: one call to action that points at your link. Just one. A bio with three calls to action has none.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an Instagram bio be?
150 characters. That is a hard limit and it counts emoji and line breaks. The tool above counts for you and only gives you bios that fit.
What should a small business put in its Instagram bio?
Four things, in order: what you do and who for, where you are (if local), one line of proof or personality, and a clear call to action that points at your link. Skip "Welcome to our page". It uses space and says nothing.
Should I use emoji in my Instagram bio?
A few, as bullets. They break the text into lines you can scan and replace words (📍 saves you typing "Located in"). Two to four is plenty. A wall of emoji looks like noise.
Can I use keywords in my bio for search?
Yes. Instagram search reads your name field and bio. Put your trade and city in plain words, like "Austin wedding photographer". The name field matters most for search, not your handle.
How often should I update my bio?
Whenever your call to action changes, like a launch or a seasonal offer. The top lines can stay the same for months. The action line is the one worth changing.
